The fluctuating color of the galaxy: “The problem is similar to determining the overall color of Earth when you’re only able to tell what Pennsylvania looks like”


A spectacular image of a spiral galaxy, NGC 3895 was released by Nasa’s Hubble Space Telescope. It was named as “One Large Stellar Latte To Go” as it looks to a larger extent like coffee, in both color and shape.

It is as if this so-called Latte was prepared by a barista. This particular image is spreading virtually because of its aesthetic beauty.

The galaxy is part of URSA Major. It is situated at a distance of over 161 million light-years. It was the German-born British astronomer William Herschel who discovered the galaxy on the 18th March 1790.

Following that, some astronomers studied it through the telescope ‘Hubble’. This telescope rotates at a speed of 28 thousand kilometers per hour and moves around the globe in only ninety-six minutes. It was reported that this galaxy has a diameter of around 45,000 light-years.

A crew of astronomers from the Johns Hopkins University once revealed that the Cosmic Latte is the average colour of the world.

In 2002, Karl Glazebrook and Ivan Baldry came to the point that the typical color of the universe was initially slightly beiges white. This was concluded after they carried out a survey of the light from over two hundred thousand galaxies.

In 2012, a team of University of Pittsburgh astronomers revealed the most precise determination yet of the colour of the Milky Way Galaxy. They said it looked like “a very pure white, almost mirroring a fresh spring snowfall”.

It has been reported that the average temperature of the Galaxy too can help to determine its colour. Actually, the stars in the galaxies release light of constant spectrum. It was observed that when a galaxy is near it appears blue and when it is far away it looks red in colour.

Eventually, the very color of the galaxy seems to fluctuate and as Jeffrey Newman from the University of Pittsburgh mentioned, “The problem is similar to determining the overall colour of Earth when you’re only able to tell what Pennsylvania looks like”.
