Early Warning Without Early Action Has No Meaning: Anand Sharma Inspires at SRM University

Anand Sharma, former Additional Director General, India Meteorological Department (IMD) and currently the President of the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS) delivered a enriching Guest Expert Lecture on the topic, “Extreme Weather Events: Monitoring, Prediction and Early Warning for a Sustainable Future”, during the Guest Expert Lecture Series ALC-1, organised by Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, SRM University, Amravati, Andhra Pradesh, here yesterday. This lecture was organised under the aegis of the National Institute of Ecology.

Dr. K.S. Rao, Former Head of the Department of Botany, University of Delhi and Former Dean, Faculty of Technology, University of Delhi and currently the Executive Secretary of the National Institute of Ecology, played a prominent role in organisng the Lecture.

Dr. Sharma took an interactive session regarding fundamentals of meteorology and then discussed about the various weather hazards and extreme weather events and explained in detail about the Kedarnath disaster how it was predicted by him and communicated to the government and masses through print and electronic media, including email etc.  “However,  the response from the Uttarakhand Government at that time was not adequate.

Dr. Sharma said that the early warning without early action has no meaning. “After that, I showed the concerned authorities from the IMD website how to interpret satellite, Radar and Lightening products in day-to-day life. Also, showcased to them how weather models are used to predict weather by interpreting the various synoptic features”, he disclosed to the august gathering.

Notably, Dr. Sharma, former Additional Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and now serving as President of the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS), stands as one of the most respected voices in meteorology. Renowned for his near-flawless weather forecasts during his tenure and even after retirement, he continues to command admiration for his precision and insight. A distinguished authority on climate change, Dr. Sharma is a sought-after presence at national and international conferences, where his expertise resonates far beyond India’s borders. His contributions have positioned him as a global thought leader on environmental and climate issues, making him a prominent figure in shaping discourse on sustainability and resilience worldwide.

Dr. Sharma, who is also a guest columnist with The News Gateway, which sharing his experience at the guest lecture he delivered at the SRM University, said, “It was a very well-received lecture at the Environmental Sciences Department of SRM University at Amravati.”

After the lecture, the Head of the Department said it was a great learning lesson for teachers as well.
