Sahar Tabar, Iranian Instagram star famous for posting photos of her in which she resembles what’s been described as a ‘ zombie Angelina Jolie ‘ has been tested positive for the coronavirus, while in prison accused of blasphemy, according to her lawyer.
In an open letter to the head of Iran’s judiciary, Ebrahim Reisei, her lawyer, Payam Derafshan, pled for her.
“Her arrest warrant was issued in October 2018, at the time she was a minor and I venture to draw your attention to this critical issue that she has contracted coronavirus in jail,” Derafshan wrote in an Instagram post.

As a reminder, Tabar was incarcerated by the authorities for several crimes including blasphemy, instigating violence, illegally acquiring property, insulting the country’s dress code as well as encouraging youth corruption.
Her attorney asked Reisei to take “appropriate and responsible measures within the frameworks of law and issued regulations.”
He also quoted an Arabic proverb: “The human who has no mercy, he does not receive mercy.”
According to the lawyer, Tabar is on a ventilator at Sina Hospital in Tehran after contracting Covid-19 in state custody.
Iran has struggled with the worst coronavirus outbreak in the Middle East, with more than 79,000 cases and over 4,900 deaths, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University, as reported by CNN.
