Chandigarh, March 12
The power sector employees received strong backing from seven political parties at a National Convention opposing the Electricity (Amendment) Bill 2025, held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi. The convention was organized by the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE) and saw participation from 11 Members of Parliament representing different parties, along with two former MPs.
Shailendra Dubey, Chairman of the All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF), briefed the parliamentarians on the adverse impact of the proposed bill on poor consumers, farmers, electricity employees, and the general public. NCCOEEE Convener Sudip Datta presented a detailed PowerPoint analysis highlighting the risks of the legislation.
All participating MPs openly opposed the Electricity Bill 2025, assuring that they would strongly resist it when presented in Parliament. They emphasized that the bill favors large corporations, enabling them to profit without investment, while undermining state-owned distribution companies (Discoms).
AIPEF Media Advisor V.K. Gupta confirmed that the political parties extending support included the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI-M], Rashtriya Janata Dal [RJD], Aam Aadmi Party [AAP], Bharat Rashtra Samithi [BRS], Communist Party of India [CPI], Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam [DMK], and the Indian National Congress [INC].
Concluding the seminar, AIPEF Secretary General P. Rathnakar Rao appealed for a united struggle against the bill. He affirmed that AIPEF, along with other federations of power employees across the country, will continue raising public awareness and intensify opposition to what they termed an “anti-people legislation.”
