Abortion is known as the artificial termination of pregnancy. It can be performed in the early stages of pregnancy. Abortion can leave a serious trauma for the body of a woman.
What is abortion according to WHO?
The World Health Organization defines abortion as the termination of pregnancy. That is the spontaneous expulsion or removal of an embryo or fetus before 22 weeks of gestation. In other words, before the fetus reaches 500 g.
However, there is no specific answer to what is abortion. This is because it depends on the reason for the act.
For instance, spontaneous abortion, or miscarriage, is not provoked. On the other hand, induced abortion is a deliberate act to terminate the pregnancy. Induced abortion is of two types;
The one that includes legally permitted termination of pregnancy. The second one is unauthorized termination. It is known as criminal abortion.
The term “medical abortion” should refer to abortions that are performed for medical reasons.
In most cases it is when prolongation of pregnancy can harm the pregnant woman’s life. Another reason why medical abortion is often performed is when there is less chances for the fetus to survive or has genetically determined malformations.
However, in practice, this term is usually applied to all abortions permitted by law. Medical abortion is any abortion performed by trained medical personnel in compliance with all requirements of the method.
What is abortion non-surgical methods?
This is one of the less efficient methods of abortion. Nevertheless, it provides a series of advantages. There is no penetration of instruments into the uterus. Thus, there is no wears and tears, no ruptures, or injuries of any kind.
There is also no inflammatory complications and no complications associated with anesthesia. However, if the deadline is missed, only a classic abortion is possible.
what is an unsafe abortion?
An unsafe abortion occurs when a pregnancy is terminated by an unskilled person. It also occurs under conditions that do not meet minimum medical requirements. Sometimes it can be both.
Abortion is less safe if it is performed with outdated methods, such as curettage, even if the staff have the appropriate skills, or if women using the medication do not have access to adequate information or the ability to consult a qualified professional if they need help.
Factors that hinder safe abortion include:
- restrictive laws;
- limited choice of services;
- high price;
- the reluctance of health care providers to engage in abortion for reasons of conscience; and
- unnecessary requirements such as mandatory waiting periods, mandatory counseling, misleading information, third party authorization, medically unnecessary tests.
The consequences of abortion are well known are high maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. According to medical experts, there is no genuine safe abortion.
Abortion can not only cripple a woman’s health, but her whole life! What is abortion for women in the vast majority of cases is a tragic page in their life, part of their bitter life experience.
There are two types of complications that occur after abortion:
Early: it is likely to occur during or immediately after an abortion
Late: it appears after a while, sometimes years after the operation
The most serious early complication after abortion is the rupture of the uterine wall known as perforation. Perforation can cause damage to large vessels, intestines, bladder as well as other internal organs.
Other early complications include:
- damage to the cervix
- incomplete extraction of the ovum
- exacerbation of an already existing chronic disease of the female genital organs
- inflammatory diseases of the female genital organs
- hormonal disorders
- menstrual dysfunction
- complication of the course of subsequent pregnancies
