New Delhi/Chandigarh, December 10
The General Secretary of All India Congress Committee, former Union Minister and Sirsa MP Kumari Selja said that the Haryana BJP government has betrayed the poor and middle-class people in the biggest possible way. She said that the Prime Minister had promised to provide a roof to every poor family in the country by 2022, but even today crores of families continue to live without a home, and Haryana is no exception.
In a statement released to the media, Selja said, “HUDA once established on the principle of “no-profit, no-loss” to provide affordable plots to the poor and middle class has been systematically weakened by the government. Today, providing homes to the public is no longer a priority; instead, the entire sector has become an open playground for private builders. Colonies are being developed in the name of Deendayal Upadhyaya across the state, where it is claimed that plots will be allotted to the poor. But the reality is that plots are being sold for Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore even in small towns and medium-sized cities. Such expensive plots are beyond the reach of the poor as well as the middle class. A poor person cannot even imagine buying such a costly plot, so how can the government claim to be working for the welfare of the poor?”
The truth, Selja said, is that the state government is mocking the poor by showing them the dream of owning a house. She added that this government is thinking only about property dealers. “During its tenure, property dealer licences have become cheaper while plots are becoming costlier. The common man has received no relief from the government’s policies. Even schemes meant for the poor are no longer reaching them; instead, these schemes have become a source of profit for developers”, she said.
Selja questioned the government, asking whether this is the development model where the poor and middle class are pushed out of cities while private developers flourish. “Has the government abandoned its policy of providing homes for the poor”, she questioned, while adding that the Congress Party has always fought for the rights of the poor and middle class.
Selja assured that when the Congress forms the government in the state, it will restore a system where every family receives access to homes and plots at fair and dignified prices, rather than policies that benefit only the wealthy and builders.
