Ludhiana, April 8
Former President of the District Congress Committee, Ludhiana (Urban) and Ex-Chairman of the Punjab Large Industrial Development Board, Pawan Dewan has raised a red flag over the perilous condition of haphazardly low-hanging electricity wires across Ludhiana, particularly in the areas falling under the West Constituency. In a statement issued here today, Dewan described the situation as a daily hazard for thousands of residents, warning that the low-hanging electricity wires pose a grave and immediate risk of accidents, electrocution, and even loss of life.
“The menace of low‑hanging electricity wires in Ludhiana West is no longer a minor inconvenience. It has become a ticking time bomb for public safety,” Dewan warned. He pointed out that in bustling localities such as Model Town, Model Town Extension, Sarabha Nagar, Gurdev Nagar, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Civil Lines and several other areas, precariously suspended cables crisscross busy streets and residential lanes, endangering commuters, shopkeepers and residents on a daily basis.
Expressing shock at the civic neglect, the senior Congress leader questioned how such a grave hazard could persist when the Punjab Power Minister – himself the MLA from Ludhiana West – appears oblivious to the crisis unfolding in his own constituency. Dewan stated that soon after assuming charge, the Punjab’s Power Minister had assured citizens that every hazardous wire would be streamlined. “A project was duly announced, promising to upgrade the city’s power infrastructure and safeguard public lives. Yet, after so many months, the progress remains painfully sluggish. What began with lofty assurances has been reduced to a crawl, stalled by procedural delays and sheer official apathy,” he rued.
Dewan further said that in the residents of Ludhiana West continue to live under the shadow of danger, forced to navigate streets where every sagging cable is a potential death trap. “The issue is not merely cosmetic – it is a matter of life and death. With Ludhiana’s growing population and increasing vehicular movement, the danger of accidental contact with these wires is ever-present”, he said, while demanding urgent intervention of the authorities to ensure that safety commitments made last year do not remains an unfulfilled promises.
