New Delhi, February 22
After a gap of 27 years, the Election Commission of India is set to convene the National Round Table Conference of ECI and State Election Commissioners on Tuesday, February 24 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The last such conference was held in 1999, making this revival a significant milestone in India’s electoral history. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar will chair the proceedings, joined by Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi. State Election Commissioners from all States and Union Territories, along with their legal and technical experts, will participate, while Chief Electoral Officers of all 36 States and UTs will also be present.
The day-long conference aims to strengthen synergy between the ECI and SECs in managing electoral processes and logistics within their respective legal frameworks. It will serve as a platform for constructive dialogue and reinforce the spirit of cooperative federalism in electoral management. Discussions will center on technology sharing, the robustness and transparency of Electronic Voting Machines, and comparative presentations on electoral roll eligibility under the Representation of the People Act, 1950. Senior officials of the Commission will showcase key technological and operational initiatives, including the recently launched ECINET digital platform, highlighting its transformative potential in streamlining electoral services.
By bringing together national and state-level institutions after nearly three decades, the conference is expected to mark a new chapter in India’s democratic journey, fostering collaboration, innovation, and trust in the country’s electoral processes.
