Gurugram, December 12
The Employees’ State Insurance Scheme (ESIC), under the Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India, is designed for employees working in factories/institutions with a salary up to a prescribed limit (Rs 21,000 per month). Once registered, the employee and their family members (spouse, children, etc.), whether male or female, can avail of medical facilities, hospital treatment, medicines, hospitalization (free or income-linked), treatment coverage, and more.
For women, maternity benefits under ESIC are a key provision, covering pregnancy, delivery, pre-and post-natal medical care, and more. During the year 2024-25, the Sub-Regional Office Gurugram provided maternity benefits amounting to Rs 4.92 crore to 587 women. Additionally, in September 2025, 22 medical camps were organized, benefiting 3,416 women. ESIC also provides coverage for sickness, accidental illness, disability (temporary or permanent), unemployment benefits, and more for workers and their families.
Thus, the Employees’ State Insurance Act extends benefits to women registered under ESIC—whether they are permanent, contractual, or casual employees, provided their institution is registered. The new Labour Code strengthens safety, equality, and facilities for women at the workplace. Provisions for equal pay ensure that women and men receive the same wages for similar work. Women are allowed to work in night shifts with explicit consent and appropriate safety and transportation arrangements. They can also opt to work in heavy or hazardous industries, including mining.
To strengthen maternity and social security, the code provides maternity leave, work-from-home options, nursing breaks, and crèche facilities as needed. Women’s proportional representation in grievance redressal processes is ensured, enhancing their participation in resolving complaints. Moreover, extended family coverage now allows inclusion of grandparents and in-laws under social security schemes, offering broader protection and benefits for female employees and their families.
While ESIC already provides health, maternity, and socio-economic security to registered women, the new Labour Code 2025 further improves working conditions, equality, safety, and social security coverage. Equal pay, night shift options, maternity work-from-home, crèche facilities, and grievance participation collectively enable women to achieve a better work-life balance.
