Chandigarh, January 18
Born on January 2, 1959 in Bathinda, Punjab, Padma Shri and Rajya Sabha MP Rajinder Gupta is a distinguished Indian industrialist, philanthropist and politician whose life journey reflects the rare blend of entrepreneurial vision and public service. A first-generation entrepreneur, he rose from modest beginnings to establish the Trident Group, a diversified conglomerate that has become a global name in textiles, paper, chemicals and energy. His leadership transformed Trident into a billion-dollar enterprise, recognized internationally for its innovation, quality and sustainability. Gupta’s philosophy has always been that business is not merely about profit but about creating opportunities and this belief has guided his efforts to generate employment, empower rural communities and invest in education and healthcare. His initiatives have created thousands of jobs in Punjab, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas, strengthening local economies and giving dignity to livelihoods.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to trade and industry, the Union Government conferred upon him the Padma Shri in 2007, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors. His success in industry was matched by his growing role in academia and public life, serving as Chairman of Punjab Engineering College, Ludhiana and contributing to the advancement of technical education and industry‑academia collaboration.
Equally significant has been his long stint with the Punjab Economic Policy and Planning Board. Gupta served as Vice Chairman of the Planning Board under successive governments — first during the Shiromani Akali Dal–BJP regime, then under the Congress government led by Captain Amarinder Singh and later under the Aam Aadmi Party government. His tenure was repeatedly extended, most recently in 2025, with the rank of Cabinet Minister, underscoring the confidence of different administrations in his policy vision and economic expertise. His role in the Planning Board allowed him to influence developmental strategies, industrial policy and long‑term economic planning for Punjab, making him a rare figure trusted across political divides.
In November 2025, Gupta entered the political arena when he was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab, marking a new chapter in his journey. His transition from industry to Parliament is widely seen as a bridge between governance and enterprise, bringing practical insights into policymaking. As a Member of Parliament, he is expected to focus on industrial growth, MSME empowerment, textile sector reforms and sustainable development, areas where his expertise is unmatched. His presence in the Rajya Sabha is anticipated to accelerate Punjab’s progress in agriculture-linked industries, employment creation and infrastructure development.
Gupta’s colleagues and associates describe him as a visionary leader with humility, someone who values collaboration and believes in empowering others. His ability to simplify complex challenges, inspire innovation and maintain ethical standards has made him a role model for aspiring entrepreneurs and policymakers alike. His journey embodies the fusion of entrepreneurship, philanthropy and public service, showing how industrial success can be harnessed for social progress and national development.
Looking ahead, Rajinder Gupta’s vision is to strengthen India’s position in global manufacturing, foster sustainable industrial practices and ensure that economic growth translates into inclusive prosperity. His dual identity as an industrialist and parliamentarian positions him uniquely to drive reforms that benefit both industry and society. From building one of India’s most successful industrial groups to stepping into the corridors of Parliament, Gupta represents the evolving role of business leaders in shaping India’s future. His legacy is one of resilience, foresight and service and his journey continues to inspire countless individuals who believe in the transformative power of enterprise and responsibility.
