Chandigarh, February 22
The Sirsa MP, former Union Cabinet Minister and All India Congress Committee, General Secretary Kumari Selja has expressed deep concern over the rising criminal incidents in Haryana. Selja said that the broad daylight shooting of a liquor trader in Kaithal, where he was allegedly fired upon 25 times, exposes the true state of law and order in the state. She said the recent gang war incident on the Rohtak bypass was equally serious and alarming. Such recurring incidents, she said, have created an atmosphere of fear across the state.
Selja stated that criminals have become so emboldened that common citizens, traders, women and even elected public representatives are feeling unsafe. “The increasing cases of extortion and the open activities of gangsters in recent days are a matter of grave concern. Incidents of former legislators allegedly receiving extortion threats indicate that fear of the law among criminals has nearly vanished”, she added. Selja said maintaining law and order is the foremost responsibility of any government but the present BJP government appears to be failing on this front. If criminals continue to commit crimes in broad daylight without timely and strict action against them, it is natural for public confidence in governance and administration to weaken.
Selja demanded that the state government launch a special drive against criminals and gangsters to ensure strict and effective action. “Concrete measures must be taken to ensure the safety of traders and ordinary citizens and to restore public faith by establishing the rule of law. She expressed hope that the government would not take the situation lightly and would take immediate concrete steps to strengthen peace, security and law enforcement in Haryana”, she demanded.
