Chandigarh, March 6
Senior Congress leader and MLA from Jalandhar Cantt., Pargat Singh, has raised serious questions over the Punjab Government’s claims regarding the construction of new medical colleges in the state. “In its very first Budget, the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had announced that 16 medical colleges would be constructed across Punjab to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand medical education”, said Pargat in a statement issued today.
Pargat further said that however, nearly four years later, the ground reality appears to be starkly different, while adding, “According to available reports, not even a single one of these proposed medical colleges has been completed so far, raising serious concerns about the gap between government announcements and the actual progress on the ground.”
Pargat stated that it is even more concerning that these claims are being reiterated in the Assembly through the Governor’s Address, which is meant to highlight the government’s achievements and policy direction. “If the figures presented are inaccurate or exaggerated, it undermines the credibility of official statements placed before the Assembly and the people of Punjab”, he asserted.
“The people of Punjab deserve complete transparency and accountability regarding the status of these projects,” Pargat said, adding, “Strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding medical education are critical priorities for the state. Delays or misleading claims only erode public trust.”
Pargat demanded that the Punjab Government issue a clear and factual update on all 16 proposed medical colleges, including details of current construction status, funds allocated and utilized, expected timelines for completion and reasons for delays, if any. He emphasized that governance must be driven by real development on the ground rather than announcements or social media narratives. “The citizens of Punjab expect responsible leadership that focuses on delivering tangible results in healthcare, education, and public welfare,” Pargat added.
