Chandigarh, April 8
Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee President Rao Narender Singh visited the mandis of Sonipat, Gharaunda, and Panipat. During his visit, he held detailed discussions with farmers and assessed the losses caused by the recent rainfall. He held the state government accountable over the issue of wheat getting soaked in mandis due to rain. He said that months of hard work by farmers is being destroyed as their produce is getting drenched in the markets, while the government and administration remain mere spectators.
Singh stated that despite weather warnings, adequate arrangements were not made to protect the wheat in mandis. Due to the lack of proper facilities such as tarpaulins, sheds, and storage, the crops were left in the open and got soaked in the rain, causing heavy losses. He alleged that the negligence and poor management of the government have directly affected farmers. Already struggling with rising costs and financial distress, farmers are now facing even more severe conditions due to crop damage.
The Congress state president demanded immediate and fair compensation for the damaged wheat and strict action against the responsible officials. He also emphasized that strong and permanent arrangements must be ensured in mandis to prevent such incidents in the future. Singh warned that if farmers’ issues are not resolved promptly, the Congress party will be compelled to launch an agitation along with the farmers.
