New Delhi, April 11
On the second day of his Bhutan visit, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal toured the Punatsangchhu-I and Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project sites. At the Punatsangchhu-I project site, the Minister participated in a concrete pouring ceremony for the dam’s construction—an important milestone in the project’s progress. Once completed, this largest joint hydroelectric project between the two countries is expected to significantly enhance Bhutan’s hydropower capacity.
During the visit, Manohar Lal emphasized the long-term partnership in the energy sector, highlighting India’s continued support through financial assistance and technical cooperation. He appreciated the coordinated efforts of engineers and experts from both sides in advancing the project safely and efficiently. He also inspected the power plant, reviewed the implementation status, and was briefed on key achievements.
Later, Manohar Lal visited the Punatsangchhu-II project, which was jointly inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on 11 November 2025. Since then, it has emerged as a major contributor to Bhutan’s energy sector.
The Minister reviewed the operational execution of the project, noting that it has already generated substantial electricity and revenue, while enabling the export of clean energy to India. He commended its successful implementation and operational efficiency, acknowledged its contribution to Bhutan’s economic development, and reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Bhutan in sustainable energy growth. His visit included inspections of the power plant and dam site, where he was briefed on ongoing works. Manohar Lal also visited Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, a repository of Bhutan’s rich historical and cultural heritage.
