Chandigarh, February 8
PGIMER Chandigarh’s Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health organized the First of its kind “Leadership and Management Training Program for Engineering Officials” from the Department of Hospital Engineering on February 7, 2027. This builds on the institute’s ongoing Leadership training series for Doctors, aiming to position engineers as vital healthcare leaders.
The program, crafted under the inspiring leadership of Prof. Vivek Lal, Director, PGIMER, and guidance from Prof. Arun K. Aggarwal, Head of the Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health cum Prof. Incharge Engineering was directed by Prof. Sonu Goel, Professor, Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health. Prof. Goel, who has represented PGIMER via the flagship program International Public Health Management Development Program (IPHMDP) of Ministry of External Affairs’ under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Scheme, has trained over 1,600 professionals from 96 countries since 2017.
Prof. Aggarwal highlighted how today’s healthcare leadership focuses on mindset shifts and strategic impact stating “Engineers form the foundation of our hospitals; arming them with leadership tools turns infrastructure hurdles into avenues for broader excellence. Lt. Col. Gurvinder Singh Bhatti, Superintending Hospital Engineer, noted that the leadership training program offered valuable insights into moving beyond routine management toward effective hospital engineering through teamwork. He expressed confidence that these tools would strengthen his engineering team, promote collaborative problem-solving, and improve operational efficiency.
Dedicated sessions focused on “Team building and leadership Styles”. Through real-world case studies, role play, group task and interactive games, 30 engineers ranging from hospital engineers, junior engineers, head clerks, divisional accounts staff, and draftsmen actively participated in the training. They brainstormed innovative strategies to tackle hospital challenges and harness these skills for healthcare advancements.
The capacity-building program comprises three sequential trainings delivered over a three-month period, where the engineers will concentrate on developing vision, mission, and strategies for the institute followed by development of time-bound action plan for improving patient care.
