In a twist that could reshape Punjab’s political narrative, two-time Chief Minister and one of the state’s tallest leaders, Capt. Amarinder Singh, has openly lauded the Congress party for its flexibility and inclusiveness. Speaking to a select media house, Amarinder remarked that while Congress remains receptive to diverse opinions, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is “rigid in its approach.”
“BJP is winning everywhere except Punjab, because they don’t consult people on the ground,” he said. The veteran leader, who currently serves as a member of the BJP National Executive, went further, admitting, “I miss the Congress system.”
This comes just days after Amarinder strongly advocated for a BJP–Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) alliance in Punjab, stressing that cadre-building alone would take “two to three elections,” whereas partnering with the Akalis could deliver immediate electoral strength.
His latest remarks, however, have triggered confusion and speculation—raising questions about whether all is well between Amarinder and the saffron party. With Punjab Assembly elections barely 15 months away, the statement carries weighty implications.
Though, at this juncture, Amarinder Singh’s praise for the Congress comes as a startling twist. Yet, the former Punjab Chief Minister has made it unequivocally clear—he was unceremoniously shown the door, and there remains no question, no possibility, of ever returning to the Congress fold.
With BJP yet to respond to Amarinder’s comments, highly placed sources in the party told The News Gateway, “The unfolding situation is being closely watched by BJP and any reaction, whatsoever, if required, will come at an appropriate time.”
