Dr. Anand Sharma

President of Indian Meteorological Society

Dr. Anand Sharma worked as Scientist-G/Head, RMC, IMD, New Delhi/Additional Director General. He also worked as the Head of Social Media/Training Division/School Project/Agromet Division. He also worked as Deputy Director General of Meteorology at the Regional Meteorological Centre, New Delhi. He was the founder Director of Meteorological Centre, Dehra Dun (2002 to 2015). He received M.Phil. Degree in Environmental Sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and M.Sc. Degree in Agricultural Meteorology, from PAU, Ludhiana and BSc. (H) from University of Delhi. Dr. Anand Sharma is the recipient of National Scholarship, GATE fellowship and UNDP /WMO fellowship. His main areas of interests are Weather Prediction, Crop weather simulation, Agro-advisories, Mountain Meteorology, Early Warning of Extreme Weather Phenomenon, Disaster Management, and Environmental security and awareness.


Dr. Sharma has been trained in USA (Early Warning), France and India in weather forecasting and extreme weather prediction. He has worked at several locations in IMD, such as Pune, Bangalore, Gangtok, Dehradun and New Delhi. He has been associated with several State/National projects such as UPROBE (DST funded project to install 100 observatories in Schools of Uttarakhand), Fog-field experiment (Facilitated installation of Instruments in record time), Early Warning of Hydro-Meteorological events in Uttarakhand, funded by World Bank. Dr. Sharma has presented and published more than 30 papers and published a book on Climatology of Dehradun. He has been awarded the Best Presentation Award at National Seminar in Hindi (organized by MOES) on three occasions. Shri Sharma has been bestowed upon with many awards and honours; notable among them are the ‘MOES award for Excellence in Atmospheric Science, Best Regional Meteorological Centre, Best Meteorological Centre, Dehradun (under his leadership)’, HUDCO award for Best Practices in Early Warning” (Rs One Lakh award), Doon Rattan award, Uttarakhand Rattan, Vir Kesri Chand Paryavaran Sarkshan Puruskar, Honour of Uttrakhand. He was the member Board of Management of Forest Research Institute University (2015-2017) and he is currently member of Board of Studies.


Dr. Sharma is a visiting faculty to National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, Forest Research Institute, Uttarakhand Academy of Administration, Nainital, Haryana Institute of Public Administration, Gurugram, Kumaun University, Doon University, JNU New Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia University, Aligarh Muslim University, Uttaranchal University and Visiting professor at Graphic Era University. He was visiting faculty at Administrative institutes at Gangtok. He was invited and delivered lectures in prestigious schools of Dehradun and Delhi NCR. He has built credibility about weather forecast and popularized meteorology among the masses and predicted Kedarnath heavy rainfall event of June, 2013. He has featured in documentary films on prestigious international channels such as National Geographic and Discovery. Apart from that he has been interviewed by Al Jajeera, NHK World-Japan and Channel NewsAsia-Singapore.


Dr. Sharma revived IMS, Bangalore chapter and Elected Treasurer of IMS Bangalore chapter (1996-97). He was elected Joint Secretary of National Council of IMS (2001-2003). He is founding member of IMS Dehradun Chapter, He was elected Secretary of IMS, Dehradun Chapter (2012-2014), National Council of IMS (2016-2018) and Vice-President of National Council of IMS (2018-2020 & 2020-2022). He was elected President of IMS in 2024. He was the managing editor of Vayu Mandal. He has more than 12000 Radio, TV and Newspaper/Magazine interviews. His interviews used to appear regularly on DD Kisan Channel. He has been interviewed by BBC Radio, Voice of America and DW Radio (German Radio). He signed MoU with American Meteorological Society at New Orleans, USA on 15 January 2025. Next month, he delivered a lecture on extreme weather at NOAA, Washington, DC in February 2025. He has been a life member of many professional societies such as Indian Meteorological Society, Indian Society for Remote Sensing, Indian Association of Agro meteorologist, National Institute of Ecology. Presently, Dr. Sharma is President of Indian Meteorological Society.
