Chandigarh, February 12

The Member of Parliament from Sirsa, former Union Cabinet Minister and Congress National General Secretary Kumari Selja has expressed deep concern over the rising incidents of extortion, ransom demands and gangster activities in Haryana, stating that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated alarmingly and people are being forced to live in an atmosphere of fear.

Selja said the reported demand of ₹5 crore in extortion from former Rohtak MLA Balraj Kundu, accompanied by a two-day ultimatum, is an extremely serious matter. Similarly, the demand of ₹10 crore from an industrialist in Faridabad, along with bullets being sent as a warning, reflects the growing audacity of criminal elements. She said that in Sirsa district too, incidents have surfaced where two businessmen were allegedly threatened with extortion demands of ₹5 crore each. These developments, she said, indicate that organized crime networks are active in the state and emboldened. Traders, industrialists, shopkeepers, educational institution operators, hospital managements and even elected representatives are not feeling secure.

Selja questioned the present state government and Chief Minister Nayab Saini, asking who is in control of law and order. She asked whether the government is waiting for a major tragedy before taking action, and whether the administration will awaken only when the threat reaches the “CM House.”

Selja demanded a strict and decisive crackdown on active gangsters and extortion networks in the state, immediate security for the victims and swift arrest and stringent punishment for those involved in the recent incidents. Selja said the primary responsibility of any government is to provide a fear-free environment to its citizens. If both the public and their elected representatives feel unsafe, it reflects a serious failure of governance and administration. The people of Haryana, she asserted, seek both answers and security.
