Chandigarh, December 8

Taking strong exception to the ‘explosive utterances’ of Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, the Congress has acted with immediate effect, suspending her from the party’s primary membership. The order was issued this evening by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who posted the one-line suspension letter on X, declaring: “Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu is hereby suspended from the Primary Membership of the party with immediate effect.”

The move comes in direct response to Dr. Sidhu’s controversial claim that becoming Punjab’s Chief Minister allegedly requires a “Rs 500-crore suitcase.” Her remark, delivered with sharp candor, sent shockwaves through the political corridors of the state, sparking outrage among rivals and deep discomfort within her own party.

The suspension comes despite the Sidhu family’s long-standing proximity to Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, a reminder that the Congress high command is unwilling to overlook remarks that strike at the party’s credibility.

Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, former MLA and wife of Navjot Singh Sidhu, stirred the political waters stating that her husband would only contemplate a return to active politics if the Congress projected him as its chief ministerial candidate for the 2027 Assembly elections. Yet, she cast serious doubt on such a scenario, pointing to deep factionalism within the Punjab Congress and asserting that several senior leaders were already locked in a race for the coveted post.

Dr. Sidhu’s remarks bore the heavy burden of frustration and defiance. She emphasized that while the Sidhus have always spoken for Punjab and upheld the spirit of Punjabiyat, they do not possess the staggering Rs 500 crore that, in her view, has become the price tag for the chief minister’s chair. Though she clarified that no one had directly demanded money from them, she alleged that the unwritten rule was clear: “The one who brings a suitcase of Rs 500 crore becomes the CM.”

Her words detonated like a political bombshell, unleashing a storm across Punjab’s corridors of power. The Aam Aadmi Party seized on the remark, branding it an “explosive revelation” and demanding clarity on who could possibly be paying such astronomical sums—and who within the system was pocketing them. The BJP went further, sharpening its attack into a full-blown indictment of the Congress high command, accusing it of reducing the race for leadership to nothing more than a high-stakes auction. Senior BJP voices thundered that corruption had so deeply infected Congress that neither the nation, nor its Constitution, nor even the party itself could be considered safe in its hands. Within the Congress, unease was evident. Congress leaders accused Dr. Sidhu of damaging the party from within. Some Congress leaders even questioned whether Navjot Singh Sidhu himself should disclose if money had changed hands when he was made state Congress chief. It was against this backdrop of mounting outrage and internal dissent that the Congress swung into immediate action, suspending Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu from the party’s primary membership.
