Shimla, January 2
Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla attended the closing ceremony of the Shimla Winter Carnival as the Chief Guest and called for united and sustained efforts to curb the growing menace of drug abuse in the State. Addressing the gathering during the New Year’s cultural evening, the Governor urged every citizen to pledge not only to stay away from drugs themselves but also to discourage others from substance abuse. Extending New Year 2026 greetings to the people of the State, he wished happiness, peace and prosperity for all. Lady Governor Janki Shukla was also present on the occasion.
The Governor said that the Shimla Winter Carnival has evolved into a vibrant reflection of Himachal Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage, natural beauty and renowned hospitality. He appreciated the enthusiastic participation of local residents and tourists, adding that the impressive performances by artists made the third edition of the carnival a major attraction. He congratulated the Municipal Corporation Shimla and the organizing committee for successfully blending cultural celebration with social awareness, stating that the carnival has now become a strong cultural identity of Shimla and the State.
Highlighting the broader responsibility associated with such festivities, the Governor emphasized the need to remain vigilant about environmental conservation and preservation of cultural heritage. He said balanced tourism, protecting nature and traditions, and fostering positive thinking are essential for the future. Stressing that awareness and collective resolve are key to safeguarding the younger generation from drug abuse, he called upon society to work together towards a healthy, drug-free Himachal Pradesh.
Earlier, Surender Chauhan, Mayor, MC Shimla honoured the Governor and the Lady Governor. The Governor also presented awards to the winners of Voice of Shimla Season-3, including a first prize of rupees 51,000 to Saurav Atri, second prize of rupees 31,000 to Poonam Pandit and third prize of rupees 21,000 to Subhash. He also released the Shimla Winter Carnival souvenir.
Cultural performances by noted comedian Ahsaan Qureshi and renowned Bollywood singer Hema Sardesai were among the highlights of the evening. Local MLA Harish Janartha, Deputy Mayor Uma Kaushal, Secretary to the Governor C.P. Verma, DC Anupam Kashyap, SP Sanjeev Gandhi, Municipal Commissioner Bhupender Atri and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
