The “Jal Chetna” workshop on water conservation and water pollution, organised by the I J Doda Foundation under the leadership of environmental advocate Jonita Doda, brought together students, teachers, and eco-club members at the School of Eminence, Pheel Khana, Patiala.

The programme was conducted in coordination with the Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST) and supported by the Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Government of Punjab, under the Environment Compensation Funds.

Focused on critical environmental challenges, the workshop addressed water pollution, groundwater depletion, and sustainable water practices. Experts highlighted that Punjab is facing a serious water crisis, with over 75% of its blocks categorised as over-exploited, raising concerns for long-term water security. Reference was also made to warnings by NITI Aayog on growing water stress across regions in India.

The session was designed as a hands-on, interactive learning experience, enabling participants to understand both the causes and solutions related to water management. Students and teachers actively engaged in discussions on conservation practices, responsible usage, and community-level action.

Addressing the gathering, Jonita Doda spoke about the broader climate context, including the potential impact of El Niño conditions on India’s water availability. Referring to projections by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), she highlighted how changing climate patterns and weaker monsoons could further intensify water scarcity challenges.

Jonita said, “Water conservation is no longer a choice but a necessity. Through ‘Jal Chetna’, we aim to move beyond awareness and create real behavioural change, empowering young individuals to take practical action towards protecting water resources.” The workshop witnessed strong participation and engagement, reinforcing the importance of institution-led environmental education and community awareness initiatives. The District Education Office, Patiala, played a key role in facilitating participation and coordination for the programme.
