Chandigarh, March 24
The State NSS Convention for Punjab and UT Chandigarh commenced today at Mohali, Punjab, with enthusiastic participation of around 250 delegates, including State NSS Officers (Punjab & UT Chandigarh), NSS Programme Coordinators, NSS Programme Officers, NSS National Awardees, and selected NSS Volunteers from across the region.
The two-day convention is being organized by the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Regional Directorate of NSS, Chandigarh, with the objective of strengthening the implementation of National Service Scheme (NSS) activities and promoting youth-led community development initiatives aligned with nation-building goals.
The inaugural session was graced by Prerna Puri, IAS, Secretary Education, Chandigarh Administration, as the Chief Guest. In her inaugural address, the Chief Guest highlighted the transformative role of NSS in shaping socially responsible youth and fostering a spirit of selfless service. She emphasized that NSS provides a powerful platform for young individuals to actively contribute towards nation-building through community engagement, awareness drives, and grassroots initiatives.
Puri further stressed the importance of equipping NSS Programme Officers with modern tools, leadership skills, and innovative approaches to effectively guide volunteers in addressing contemporary challenges such as environmental sustainability, public health awareness, and social inclusion.
Jai Bhagwan, Regional Director, NSS Regional Directorate Chandigarh, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, outlined key priorities and ongoing initiatives under NSS and encouraged Programme Officers to adopt innovative, impactful, and community-oriented approaches to enhance outreach and effectiveness.
The first day featured interactive sessions and deliberations focusing on strengthening NSS programme implementation, enhancing community participation, and sharing best practices among institutions. Senior officials welcomed the delegates and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing NSS activities and empowering youth for meaningful societal contribution. The convention will continue tomorrow with further sessions aimed at reinforcing the role of NSS in nation-building and youth empowerment.
