New Delhi, July 1
Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, who has been entrusted with the responsibility of the Punjab Congress Core Committee Chairperson is a seasoned Congress leader from Punjab, has carved a distinct space in the party’s state and national politics through his grassroots connect and organizational acumen. Born on 1 February 1959 in Dharowali village of Gurdaspur district, he hails from a political family as the son of Santokh Singh Randhawa, who twice served as Punjab Congress chief. Rooted in the agrarian and borderland ethos of Majha, Randhawa’s political journey began with his election as MLA from Fatehgarh Churian in 2002, defeating Akali stalwart Nirmal Singh Kahlon. He later represented Dera Baba Nanak constituency from 2012 to 2022, consolidating his influence in Punjab’s border belt. Over the years, he held important portfolios including Cooperation and Jails in the Punjab Cabinet, and rose to prominence as Deputy Chief Minister in Charanjit Singh Channi’s government during 2021–22.
From Fatehgarh Churian MLA to Punjab Deputy Chief Minister
Randhawa’s career reflects both his grassroots leadership and his organizational responsibilities. He has served as Vice-President of Punjab Youth Congress, General Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and chaired Vidhan Sabha committees including the Privilege Committee. Though he lost the 2022 Assembly election from Dera Baba Nanak but in 2024 general elections, he won the Gurdaspur parliamentary seat, succeeding Sunny Deol. His political style is often described as forthright and uncompromising, particularly on issues concerning Punjab’s agrarian distress and the challenges of border districts. His influence has not been without contention; he has had public differences with leaders like Navjot Singh Sidhu during periods of internal party turbulence, and has often been seen as a contender for the Punjab Congress presidency. Despite these challenges, he has remained a steady presence in the party’s Majha leadership, embodying continuity in a region crucial to Congress’s fortunes.
From Majha to the National Stage
In 2024, Randhawa transitioned to national politics by winning the Lok Sabha election from Gurdaspur, succeeding actor-politician Sunny Deol. This victory marked his shift from state-level leadership to the national stage, where he was soon appointed General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee in charge of Rajasthan, succeeding Ajay Maken. His new role places him at the heart of Congress’s organizational strategy in a key Hindi belt state, underscoring the party’s trust in his ability to manage complex political terrains. Today, Randhawa stands as a bridge between Punjab’s grassroots politics and the Congress’s national apparatus, combining his regional credibility with broader responsibilities. His trajectory from MLA to Deputy Chief Minister, and now MP and AICC General Secretary, highlights his adaptability and enduring relevance in the party’s evolving landscape.
