New Delhi, July 1
Finally, the Congress has settled the Punjab organizational issue, without practically bringing any change. It has continued with Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president and Partap Singh Bajwa as the Congress Legislature Party leader.
Warring may be relatively young and less experienced than others, but he has really not lagged behind in his leadership role for the last four and a half years. He has navigated the party well and has not encouraged any factionalism. There are leaders who were not happy with him, but that was only for the reason of competition. Another important factor that went into his favour is his energy and capacity to work round the clock. He has managed to reach out to each and every worker across the state. He has even tried his best to take everyone along.
Even the critics says that Warring has done reasonably well against all odds. Given the way the Aam Aadmi Party has run the government, it left little scope and space for the opposition party, as all instruments of state machinery and even non-state players remained under firm control of the government. They continue even now, when the government is at the fag end of its term. Yet Warring managed to do well. His best test was the 2024 General Elections in which he led the party to an impressive performance winning 7 of the 13 parliamentary constituencies. The ruling AAP came second with just 3 seats. One of the seats was won by the Akalis and two by independents.
Now, with the leadership issue already having been settled, Warring has a challenging task ahead. He has overcome the first challenge to his leadership. Now he is headed for the decisive battle of 2027 Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections. Party has reposed great trust in him. He will have to go an extra mile to vindicate the party’s trust and expectations from him.
The only significant and important appointment the Congress made today is that of Charanjit Singh Channi as the Chairman of the Campaign Committee. The issue for the party was actually about accommodating and adjusting him ahead of the elections. He will now suitably “feel” adjusted. As regards the Chief Ministerial claims, he already happens to be a former Chief Minister, which will always qualify him as a strong contender.
Another prominent and serious contender for the PPCC president’s post Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has also been accommodated as the Chairman of the Core Committee, while Vijay Inder Singla, whose name was doing rounds for a while, has been made Chairman of the Election Management Committee. With today’s appointments, the Congress has tried to please everyone. Whether all of them would actually be pleased with these appointments is not certain, but they have no reason to feel displeased either. The Congress high command realized that it was too late to affect the leadership change at the top in Punjab. Just six more months are left for the elections. It would not have been possible for the new incumbent to adjust and settle down even, leave aside leading the battle.
