When Charanjit Singh Channi was elevated as Punjab’s Chief Minister in September 2021, the moment was hailed as historic — he became the state’s first Dalit leader to occupy its highest office. Yet, almost immediately, his tenure was dogged by controversies that newspapers chronicled in detail.
The #MeToo Row and Its Political Fallout
One of the earliest issues dated back to November 2018, during the #MeToo movement, when a woman IAS officer accused Channi of sending inappropriate text messages. Though no formal complaint was lodged and then Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh intervened to settle the matter, the controversy resurfaced in June 2021. Punjab State Women Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati reopened the case suo motu, demanding a government response and even threatening a hunger strike. Congress insiders alleged the revival was politically motivated, intended to embarrass Channi, who was part of the faction challenging Amarinder’s leadership.
Astrological Advice and Political Optics
Channi’s reliance on astrology also drew ridicule. Shortly after joining the cabinet, he ordered the construction of an unauthorized road from a park outside his official residence in Chandigarh to create an east‑facing entry, supposedly for political advantage. The administration demolished it within hours. On another occasion, following astrological advice, he rode an elephant in the lawns of his Kharar home — an act that went viral and was widely mocked as a symbol of superstition and poor judgment.
Allegations That Shadowed His Career
In March 2018, Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, then Leader of Opposition, accused Channi of involvement in illegal mining. Though Channi denied the charge, the allegation added to the cloud of suspicion surrounding him.
ED Raids, Allegations and Electoral Fallout
The controversies deepened in January 2022, weeks before the Assembly elections, when the Enforcement Directorate raided multiple locations, including the home of Channi’s nephew, Bhupinder Singh Honey. The ED claimed to have seized large sums of cash and documents linked to illegal sand mining. Opposition parties seized on the raids to accuse Channi of shielding corruption, while he dismissed them as a politically motivated action by the BJP‑led Centre. The timing, so close to polling, intensified questions about his credibility and the Congress’s decision to project him as its chief ministerial face.
The Highs and Lows of Brief Chief Ministership
Together, these episodes painted a complex portrait of Channi’s brief tenure. On one hand, his elevation was celebrated as a breakthrough for Dalit representation, and he sought to project himself as a pro‑people leader with tariff cuts and waivers. On the other hand, allegations of misconduct, superstition, and corruption — from the #MeToo text controversy to the elephant ride spectacle and the ED raids — undermined his image and armed his rivals. His defeat in both Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur constituencies in the 2022 elections underscored how these controversies, combined with the Aam Aadmi Party’s surge, eroded the Congress’s experiment.
The Triumph and Tragedy of a Political Experiment
Channi’s story thus reflects both the promise and the pitfalls of his historic elevation — a leader who broke barriers but whose tenure was overshadowed by controversies that ultimately shaped his downfall.
