Punjab Congress leader and Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira today demanded the immediate arrest of Punjab Finance Minister and Dirba MLA Harpal Singh Cheema, after the family of the late Gulzar Singh of Toor Banjara village, Dirba (District Sangrur), publicly alleged that his cremation was carried out forcibly, under heavy police presence and without their free consent.

The family has categorically stated that the last rites of Gulzar Singh were performed against their wishes, and has demanded strict action against Harpal Singh Cheema and all officials responsible for the forced cremation.

Condemning the incident, Khaira said, “Forcibly cremating a deceased person against the wishes of the family is not merely an abuse of power—it is an assault on human dignity and on the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution. The Bhagwant Mann Government has crossed every democratic and moral limit in its desperation to suppress the truth.”

Khaira demanded the immediate arrest of Harpal Singh Cheema, his dismissal from the Punjab Cabinet, and the registration of FIRs against the Minister, the police and civil officials concerned, and every individual involved in facilitating the forced cremation. He further demanded that the Punjab Government provide ₹2 crore as compensation to the bereaved family without delay.

Referring to the family’s decision not to hold the Bhog ceremony until justice is delivered, Khaira said this reflects the complete breakdown of public faith in the present government. “The Congress Party stands firmly with the family of Gulzar Singh in their fight for justice. We will continue to raise this issue at every forum until all those responsible are brought to book,” Khaira added.
