Chandigarh, August 6
A meeting of the Appraisal Committee was held today under the chairmanship of H. Rajesh Prasad, IAS, Chief Secretary, U.T. Chandigarh, to consider important infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening sports infrastructure and enhancing public safety in the Union Territory.
Present during the meeting were Shri Diprava Lakra, IAS, Finance Secretary; Prerna Puri, IAS, Secretary Engineering; Sorabh Kumar Arora, PCS, Director Sports; C. B. Ojha, Chief Engineer; Rajeev Mehta, Chief Architect, and other officers of the Chandigarh Administration.
The following proposals were submitted by the Engineering Department for grant of Administrative Approval and Financial Sanction: Upgradation of Hockey Ground, Sports Complex, Sector-7, Chandigarh (₹22.93 Crore). The Committee considered the proposal for comprehensive upgradation of the Sports Complex, Sector-7, Chandigarh, with the objective of developing the facility for hosting the 2027 Asian Relay Championships and other national and international athletics events.
The project includes modernization of the existing sports infrastructure comprising construction of new spectator seating with a total capacity of 3,400 spectators, tensile canopy, renovation and expansion of the existing pavilion with dedicated facilities for athletes, technical officials, media, VIPs and VVIPs, and development of allied civil, electrical and public health infrastructure.
A key component of the project is the installation of international-standard LED Sports Flood Lights (1650 W) mounted on four 35-metre-high mast poles. The lighting system has been designed to achieve illumination for fixed-camera broadcasting in accordance with the IAAF Track & Field Facilities Manual for major international competitions, thereby enabling the venue to host televised international athletics events.
