Punjab Govt Issues Urgent Alert on Possible Bhakra–Nangal Water Release from June 11

Decision driven by escalating water demand from partner states

In an urgent alert, the Punjab Government has intimated that partner States are continuously increasing their demand for water. “To meet these requirements, it may become necessary to release additional water from Bhakra Dam to the downstream side of Nangal Dam with effect from 11.06.2026,” reads an internal communication of the state government.

The government has also instructed the senior officials to inform all concerned authorities well in advance to prevent any loss of life or property. “Field staff must remain alert and prepared, as operation of the downstream gates of Nangal Dam may be required at any time from 11.06.2026 onwards,” reads the communiqué.

The letter also mentioned that detailed information regarding downstream discharge will be communicated based on regulation orders received from the SDE, Water Regulation. “This communication is to be treated as urgent,” concludes the communiqué.
