Chandigarh, April 24
The Sirsa MP, General Secretary of All India Congress Committee and former Union minister Kumari Selja strongly condemned remarks attributed to US President Donald Trump referring to India as “hellhole”. Kumari Selja said the statement was not only unfortunate but also a direct insult to the dignity and honour of a country like India, and cannot be accepted under any circumstances.
Selja expressed serious concern over what she termed the “silence” of the Centre on the issue. Kumari Selja said that the most troubling aspect is that the BJP-led central government has remained silent so far. Maintaining silence on such a sensitive matter related to national pride is not diplomacy, but a sign of weakness and helplessness. Kumari Selja added that the government’s foreign policy has repeatedly reflected its inability to firmly safeguard India’s global reputation. Kumari Selja said the people across the country are asking what kind of pressure or fear is preventing the Prime Minister from giving a clear and strong response to the United States.
Selja urged the Centre to take an immediate and clear stand on the issue and adopt concrete diplomatic measures to protect India’s honour at the international level. She added the dignity of the nation is paramount, and no compromise on it will be acceptable.
