Chandigarh/Ludhiana, April 20

Parents and guardians in Ludhiana are strongly urged to ensure the timely completion of the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) of Aadhaar for children in the age groups of 5–7 years (MBU-1) and 15–17 years (MBU-2). As children grow, their biometric attributes such as fingerprints, iris scans and facial photographs undergo significant changes, making it essential to update these details at the prescribed stages to maintain the accuracy, reliability and authentication capability of their Aadhaar records.

Failure to complete the MBU within the stipulated timelines may lead to authentication failures, which can adversely impact access to essential services. Updated Aadhaar biometrics are increasingly being used as a primary mode of identity verification in competitive and entrance examinations such as NEET, as well as in school admissions, scholarship schemes and other academic processes. In addition, Aadhaar-based authentication is widely required for banking services, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and various government welfare schemes, making timely biometric updates critical for uninterrupted access to these services.

The Unique Identification Authority of India is currently offering Mandatory Biometric Updates free of cost for children up to 17 years till 30th September 2026, in order to encourage maximum compliance. Parents and guardians are advised to avail of this facility at the earliest to avoid any inconvenience in the future.

As per UDISE data for Ludhiana district, out of a total of 9,15,410 students, a substantial number of children are yet to complete their biometric updates. Approximately 1,22,596 children in the age group of 5–7 years have pending MBU-1, while around 1,04,204 children in the age group of 15–17 years have pending MBU-2, indicating the need for immediate attention and action to ensure full coverage.

Biometric updates can be completed conveniently at Aadhaar Seva Kendras (ASKs), Sewa Kendras across Punjab and through special Aadhaar update camps being conducted in schools. Parents are encouraged to carry the child’s Aadhaar number and relevant supporting documents, if required, and visit the nearest centre or utilise school-based update drives.

Timely completion of the Mandatory Biometric Update ensures seamless access to Aadhaar-enabled services, continued eligibility for scholarships and educational benefits, smooth participation in examinations and admissions, hassle-free banking and financial transactions through e-KYC, and reduces the risk of authentication failures in the future. It also plays a crucial role in strengthening the secure digital identity of children.

Given the increasing reliance on Aadhaar for service delivery and identity verification, completion of the Mandatory Biometric Update within the prescribed age windows is essential. All eligible families are therefore strongly encouraged to prioritise this update and take full advantage of the free service being provided for a limited time.
