Chandigarh, May 8
Governor of Punjab, Administrator, UT Chandigarh, and President of the Indian Red Cross Society, Punjab, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, presided over the State-Level function organised to mark World Red Cross Day at Punjab Lok Bhavan today.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor called upon citizens to strengthen the spirit of compassion, cooperation and selfless service to build an inclusive society. Referring to this year’s theme, “On the Side of Humanity,” he said the occasion honours volunteers who serve people in distress without discrimination.
The Governor highlighted the commendable flood relief work undertaken by the Punjab Red Cross during devastating floods, including the supply of food, medicines, tents and other essential relief material to affected families. Referring to “Operation Sindoor,” he said the Punjab Red Cross played a significant role in emergency response training, Civil Defence support and mega blood donation drives.
Expressing concern over the growing menace of drug abuse, the Governor termed it a serious challenge affecting the youth of Punjab. Referring to the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” campaign, he said padyatras organised through the Red Cross in the border districts of Punjab have created awareness among youth and local communities. He urged people to transform the fight against drugs into a mass movement for a healthy, safe and prosperous Punjab.
Citing the example of Bhai Kanhaiya, disciple of Guru Gobind Singh, the Governor said Punjab’s tradition of selfless service and compassion truly reflects the spirit of the Red Cross Movement. He noted that Bhai Kanhaiya served wounded soldiers from both sides during battle without discrimination, embodying the values of humanity and selfless service centuries before the establishment of the Red Cross.
The Governor also appreciated the various humanitarian initiatives undertaken by the Indian Red Cross Society, Punjab State Branch, towards building a healthier and stronger society, including support for a TB-Mukt Punjab through the distribution of nutrition kits to TB patients.
During the programme, the Governor paid floral tributes to Henry Dunant and Bhai Kanhaiya. CPR and First Aid demonstrations were conducted, while Red Cross volunteers presented a Nukad Natak highlighting the ill-effects of drug abuse. Detoxified patients also shared their experiences, followed by a cultural Bhangra performance. The Governor honoured donors for their humanitarian contributions and distributed sewing machines to needy women, also distributed nutrition kits to TB patients.
Among those present on the occasion were Member of the Administrator’s Advisory Council, Sanjay Tandon; Additional Chief Secretary to Governor, Vivek Pratap Singh; Secretary, Red Cross Society Punjab, Shivdular Singh Dhillon; Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh, Nishant Kumar Yadav; and other distinguished guests.
