With Punjab Assembly elections due in February 2027, the political battle is beginning to take shape but the final outcome remains wide open. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party continues to enjoy a narrow advantage, while Congress has emerged as its principal challenger. The BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal remain individually weaker than the two leading parties but a possible realignment between the two could significantly alter the electoral arithmetic. At the same time, Waris Punjab De has emerged as a smaller but potentially consequential force in selected constituencies.
AAP Leads, But Congress Remains Within Striking Distance
An analysis of the latest opinion-poll indicators suggests that AAP is still the single largest political force in the state. An August 2026 Vote Vibe survey puts AAP at around 34 per cent of the projected vote, followed by Congress at 30.2 per cent. BJP is placed at 12.2 per cent, SAD at 11.3 per cent and Waris Punjab De at 6.6 per cent. On the question of who is likely to form the next government, around 36.7 per cent of respondents believe AAP is likely to win, compared with 26.8 per cent for Congress.
A Narrow Lead, Not a Decided Election
The numbers, however, do not suggest an election that is already decided. AAP’s lead over Congress is relatively narrow and Punjab has repeatedly demonstrated that a small shift in voter preference can translate into a very large difference in Assembly seats.
AAP’s Biggest Strength: A Divided Anti-Incumbency Vote
AAP’s biggest advantage is that it remains the largest individual political force while the anti-incumbency vote, if there is one, is divided among several parties. The party also has the advantage of incumbency and a recognisable leadership structure. Its performance in government will now be judged against five years of experience rather than promises of change. That makes the 2027 election fundamentally different from the 2022 contest.
Congress Within Reach, But Unity Remains the Test
Congress, meanwhile, has every reason to believe that it can seriously challenge AAP. Its present vote share is close enough to the ruling party’s to make a Congress comeback a realistic possibility. The difficulty for Congress is not necessarily a shortage of electoral support but the ability to convert that support into a united campaign.
When Internal Battles Become an Election Liability
Internal disagreements, factionalism and competing ambitions can prove more damaging than an opponent’s campaign. Punjab’s political history offers a particularly important warning on this count. In 2022, Congress entered the election with a sizeable political base but prolonged internal turmoil, leadership changes and organisational uncertainty contributed to the party’s spectacular collapse. The lesson is obvious: a party can lose an election before polling day if its internal battles become more important than the electorate’s concerns.
Congress Must Turn Its Opportunity Into a United Challenge
That is the principal challenge before Congress in 2027. If it succeeds in presenting itself as a disciplined and credible alternative to AAP, the contest could become extremely close. If internal bickering continues to dominate the political narrative, the advantage could once again slip towards the ruling party.
SAD’s Decline Is Real, But Its Political Relevance Is Not Over
The Shiromani Akali Dal presents a different picture. Once one of Punjab’s principal political forces, SAD has experienced a prolonged decline. Its vote share has fallen considerably over successive Assembly elections, and its current standalone position is substantially weaker than its historical strength. Yet writing off SAD would be premature. The party still possesses an organisational network and a residual support base that can matter greatly in a first-past-the-post election. Its significance becomes even greater in the context of a possible political understanding with the BJP.
A BJP-SAD Reunion Could Reshape Punjab’s Electoral Equation
A BJP-SAD reunion could be one of the most important developments of the election campaign. The two parties have historically complemented each other electorally, with SAD possessing a stronger rural and traditional Sikh base and BJP developing a stronger urban support base. Their separation changed the political landscape, while their possible reunion could once again create a significant bloc.
BJP’s Punjab Footprint Is Growing Beyond Its Traditional Urban Base
The BJP itself has undergone a transformation in Punjab. Although it has traditionally been much stronger in urban areas and has struggled to establish comparable influence in rural constituencies, its vote share in the 2024 Lok Sabha election demonstrated that its support base is considerably larger than its previous Assembly performance suggested.
BJP’s Real Test: Turning Vote Share Into Assembly Seats
The challenge for BJP is converting votes into Assembly seats. A party can obtain a respectable statewide vote share and still struggle to win constituencies if its support is geographically concentrated. BJP therefore needs a much deeper rural organisation if it wants to emerge as an independent contender for power.
A BJP-SAD Alliance Must Deliver More Than an Arithmetic Advantage
An alliance with SAD could partly address that problem. But the success of such an alliance would depend heavily on seat-sharing, transferability of votes and the ability of the two organisations to work together at the constituency level. Simply adding the BJP and SAD vote percentages would be misleading. Electoral alliances work only when voters of one party actually transfer their support to the alliance candidate.
Waris Punjab De Could Punch Above Its Statewide Vote Share
Waris Punjab De represents another complication. Its statewide vote share is currently much smaller than that of AAP or Congress but statewide percentages do not tell the entire story in Punjab. If the party concentrates its support in particular constituencies, it could influence the result far beyond its overall vote percentage.
A Small Vote Share Could Have a Big Impact on Close Contests
A six or seven per cent statewide vote does not necessarily translate into a significant number of Assembly seats. But if that vote is concentrated in constituencies where the leading candidates are separated by only a few thousand votes, Waris Punjab De could determine which of the larger parties wins. This makes the party particularly important to the electoral arithmetic in selected areas. Its emergence could also put additional pressure on SAD by competing for portions of the traditional Panthic electorate. Depending on constituency-level dynamics, however, its presence could affect AAP and Congress as well.
Vote Share Alone Cannot Predict Punjab’s Verdict
The most important point about the 2027 election is therefore that statewide vote percentages should not be confused with seat projections. Punjab has 117 Assembly constituencies and the party that finishes first in each constituency takes the seat regardless of its margin. A party with a slightly smaller statewide vote can therefore win substantially more seats if its support is efficiently distributed.
AAP Has the Edge, But Alliances Could Rewrite the Contest
At present, AAP appears to have the advantage because it is the strongest individual party and because the opposition remains divided. Congress is close enough to make the contest genuinely competitive but it has to overcome its own organisational weaknesses. BJP and SAD, if they remain separate, appear unlikely to challenge for government on their own. If they come together, however, they could transform the contest into a much tighter three-way battle.
Waris Punjab De Could Be the Spoiler in a Closely Fought Election
Waris Punjab De, meanwhile, may not be in a position to form the government but it could become an important spoiler in constituencies where its support is concentrated.
The Election May Turn on Who Can Consolidate the Anti-AAP Vote
The 2027 Punjab election, therefore, is best described not as an AAP election or a Congress election at this stage, but as an election in which the outcome could depend heavily on whether the opposition succeeds or fails in consolidating itself.
Each Party Faces a Different Path to Power
For AAP, the objective will be to preserve its lead and prevent anti-incumbency from consolidating behind a single challenger. For Congress, the challenge is to convince voters that it has learnt the lessons of 2022 and can offer a stable alternative. For BJP and SAD, the immediate question is whether their combined strength is greater than the sum of their separate parts. And for Waris Punjab De, the opportunity lies not necessarily in winning a large number of seats but in influencing the margins that decide them.
The Opinion Polls Show the Mood, But Alliances and Organisation Could Decide the Verdict
As of now, AAP remains ahead, Congress is within striking distance, and the BJP-SAD equation remains the biggest wildcard. But with several months still to go, Punjab’s electoral landscape is far from settled. The party that manages its alliances, internal discipline, constituency strategy and vote consolidation most effectively may ultimately have an advantage greater than what the current statewide numbers indicate.
