Lucknow, June 8
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh Government is continuously working towards ensuring that education reaches the last person in society and towards realizing the goal of an illiteracy-free state. In this direction, the Nav Bharat Literacy Programme is emerging as a medium of positive transformation in the lives of lakhs of people.
Under this campaign, which is aimed at making illiterate persons above 15 years of age literate, more than 11.68 lakh people have been made literate in the state from 2022-23 to 2025-26. The programme is strengthening self-reliance, awareness, and social empowerment through education.
Under the centrally sponsored Nav Bharat Saksharta Abhiyan, illiterate citizens above the age of 15 are identified and made literate with the support of volunteers and trained master trainers. Along with teaching beneficiaries reading, writing, and numeracy skills, the programme also provides them with basic knowledge useful in daily life, enabling them to participate more effectively in social and economic activities. By making lakhs of people literate, the government is not only strengthening the fight against illiteracy but is also playing an important role in building a self-reliant, aware, and empowered Uttar Pradesh.
Under the campaign, identified volunteers are trained by master trainers. Thereafter, volunteers conduct literacy classes through both online and offline modes. These classes, being conducted across the state, are instilling new confidence in the lives of thousands of people. The government’s objective is not merely to impart literacy but also to make citizens aware, capable, and self-reliant.
Under the Nav Bharat Saksharta Abhiyan, seven literacy assessment examinations have been conducted in the state so far. A total of 13,81,530 participants appeared in these examinations, out of which 11,68,292 participants were declared successful.
More than 1.46 lakh participants appeared in the examination conducted during 2022-23, while the latest examination conducted in 2025-26 recorded the participation of more than 4.01 lakh participants. These figures testify to the growing reach and effectiveness of the programme.
The Yogi Government has already prepared to make the Nav Bharat Literacy Programme more comprehensive and result-oriented in 2026-27. In accordance with the guidelines of the Government of India, all districts of the state have been assigned targets to identify illiterate persons above the age of 15 and make them literate.
Under this initiative, identified illiterate individuals will be linked with volunteers, who will receive specialized training from trained master trainers. Thereafter, volunteers will conduct literacy classes through online and offline modes.
The progress of the campaign will be monitored regularly, and as per the directions of the Government of India, literacy assessment examinations will be conducted twice a year to evaluate the achievements of neo-literates.
The government’s objective is to connect as many people as possible with education and enable them to become self-reliant, aware, and active participants in the mainstream of society.
