Ludhiana, October 21

In a monumental leap forward for orthopedic oncology and reconstructive surgery, a premier multidisciplinary medical team at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana, has scripted medical history by successfully performing Punjab’s very first patient-specific, 3D-printed titanium bone implant surgery.

The landmark procedure was executed on a 19-year-old girl battling an aggressive bone cancer (sarcoma) of the distal radius (wrist bone). This breakthrough shatters traditional surgical limitations, offering a revolutionary, limb-saving lease on life for patients suffering from complex bone tumors across Northern India.

Congratulating the medical team on this historic milestone, Bipin Gupta, Secretary of the DMCH Managing Society, said, “This monumental achievement reinforces our core vision of bringing world-class, advanced medical treatments directly to our patients. When patients look to international medical hubs for solutions, DMCH proves that our indigenous talent, technology, and infrastructure are fully capable of delivering pioneering healthcare interventions right here in Punjab.”

Echoing these sentiments, Dr. Gurpreet S. Wander, Principal of DMCH, added, “We are incredibly proud of this historic milestone. The success of this highly complex surgery highlights our continuous efforts to foster innovation, upgrade clinical capabilities, and adopt cutting-edge biomedical technology. DMCH remains steadfastly committed to ensuring our patients never have to compromise on quality of life, offering viable, limb-saving alternatives where traditional treatments see limitations.”

Faced with the daunting challenge of entirely removing the cancerous bone without compromising the young patient’s arm, Dr. Anubhav Sharma, Associate Professor of Orthopedics and Bone Soft Tissue Oncology at DMCH, spearheaded the clinical strategy. Dr. Sharma’s pioneering vision and deep expertise allowed the team to safely excise the tumor with oncological precision while mapping out an unprecedented pathway to completely reconstruct the delicate mechanics of the wrist joint.

A vital pillar of this historic success was the masterful reconstructive surgery handled by Dr. Sheerin Shah, Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at DMCH. Ensuring the implant would integrate seamlessly, Dr. Shah’s meticulous precision in soft tissue management, microvascular reconstruction, and structural integration restored the complex wrist joint mechanism.

This medical marvel was made possible through an extraordinary cross-disciplinary collaboration with the engineering department at the prestigious Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (Thapar University), Patiala.

Working in absolute lockstep with Dr. Anubhav Sharma’s clinical blueprints, esteemed engineers Er. Vivek Jain and Er. Tarunpreet Bhatia utilized cutting-edge technology to design, plan, and manufacture the patient-specific titanium bone. This perfect marriage of medicine and engineering resulted in a flawlessly tailored titanium implant that precisely mirrored the patient’s unique anatomy, ensuring a perfect fit and long-term biological stability.

By successfully bridging the gap between advanced manufacturing and life-saving surgery, DMCH Ludhiana has firmly positioned Punjab on the global map of advanced medical innovation, proving that Indian healthcare infrastructure is fully equipped to deliver world-class, precise outcomes.
