Chandigarh, June 13
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Parambans Singh Romana today asserted he had voluntarily withdrawn his application to enter Canada when asked to give an undertaking that he would not indulge in any political activity after being stopped for questioning by the Canadian immigration authorities after landing in Vancouver.
Asserting that a manufactured complaint had been submitted to the Canadian immigration authorities from Manila to stop his entry into the country even though he had taken the required permission from court, Parambans Romana said, “The complainant was privy to all political cases registered against me, few of which even I have forgotten”. Romana said the complaint tried to make out a case that he was a threat to public safety.
Addressing a press conference here, the Akali leader said he had informed the immigration authorities that he wanted to meet his daughter, attend a marriage function and interact with NRIs in view of the forthcoming assembly elections in Punjab. “When I was informed that I would have to give an undertaking that I would not indulge in any political activity I chose to return to India”. He also placed the paper proving he had left Canada voluntarily before the media.
Romana said all this was done because the Aam Aadmi Party had got rattled by the response being given to the SAD by the Non Resident Indian community in Canada. “The AAP government had also tried its best to unsettle the SAD team visit by provoking the NRI community to ask us tough questions”. He also disclosed that the AAP propaganda machinery went all out to defame him by spreading the rumour that he had got down at Vancouver in an inebriated condition. He said an electronic channel had also carried this malicious lie for which he would file a defamation case against it besides filing police complaints against social media pages who had tried to spread this canard. “I have never touched alcohol in my life and will vigorously take on all those who have tried to tarnish my reputation in this way”, he added.
