Shimla, April 18
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan has written to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, urging immediate restoration of the Kangra Valley Rail Service (Pathankot–Jogindernagar) and reconsideration of the proposal to shift Pathankot Railway Station to Mamun Cantonment.
Mahajan said the Kangra Valley rail service is not merely a mode of transport but a lifeline for thousands of locals, students, patients, tourists, and defense personnel. He pointed out that services on this historic rail route have been disrupted for nearly four years, causing immense inconvenience to the public. He stressed that the suspension has negatively impacted the local economy, tourism, and daily life. “For years, the people of Kangra Valley have been demanding that this rail service be restored on priority,” he said.
In his letter, Mahajan also highlighted widespread concern among locals over the proposal to relocate Pathankot Railway Station. He noted that the current station has served the region for over a century and is better connected to the bus stand, hospitals, markets, hotels, and military establishments. He warned that shifting the station without proper planning would disrupt connectivity, increase travel time and costs, and risk weakening the existing Kangra Valley rail network. “Any decision must carefully evaluate public sentiment and practical considerations,” he said.
Mahajan urged the central government to prioritize restoration of the Pathankot–Jogindernagar rail service and reconsider the station‑shifting proposal. He expressed confidence that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government would take a positive decision keeping in mind public sentiment and regional needs. “Public convenience and regional development must be given the highest priority,” he added.
