Almora, June 6
The state-level “Save the Fields Campaign” was organized at Hawalbagh with the aim of safeguarding agriculture and farmers’ future amidst challenges of climate change. The programme emphasized soil fertility, preservation, agricultural protection, and raising awareness among farmers about future challenges. Special focus was placed on conserving and promoting coarse grains such as mandua, jhangora, chaulai, and other traditional crops.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, attending as chief guest, said that coming among farmers on the soil of Almora gives him new energy. He stated that the “Save the Fields Campaign” is no longer just a government program but has become a mass movement through public participation. He urged farmers to pledge to conserve their agricultural land, soil, and natural resources. He said farmers are not only food providers but also the strength and courage of the nation. In our culture, soil is revered like a mother, not merely a piece of land. Therefore, maintaining soil fertility and keeping fields as free as possible from chemicals is essential. He stressed the responsibility of leaving behind a healthy and secure agricultural system for future generations. He also mentioned that a provision of ₹200 crore has been made in the budget to increase farmers’ income.
The Chief Minister urged farmers to regularly test soil, use water judiciously, and adopt farming practices based on expert advice and scientific research. He emphasized selecting crops according to changing weather and climate conditions. He highlighted that environmental protection and economic prosperity are complementary, and a balance between ecology and economy must be maintained. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Mann Ki Baat” program, he said inspiration should be drawn from those doing excellent work in conserving water, forests, land, and nature.
The Chief Minister said the state government is continuously working for farmers’ prosperity. Several schemes are being implemented in horticulture to increase farmers’ income, including polyhouses, fruit cultivation, cold storage, mega food parks, and promotion of aromatic crops. Currently, about 23,000 hectares in the state are under aromatic crop cultivation. Coarse grains are also being specially promoted. He added that benefits of schemes are being provided directly to farmers through DBT, eliminating middlemen. He concluded by saying that Uttarakhand’s leading position in increasing farmers’ income is a living example of the success of government policies. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government does not merely make promises but believes in working on the ground. He called upon farmers to pledge soil testing and adoption of sustainable farming practices.
