The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today expressed concern over the removal of four papers covering the history of Punjab from the post graduate History syllabus at Panjab University and asserted the move would do dis-service to preserving the rich historical heritage of the State.
Giving details on the issue, senior leader Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said the four papers which provided students an opportunity to study the history of Punjab from the 15th to the 17th century, the 18th century, the 19th century and the 20th century , should not be tinkered in any form.
Dr Cheema said he had taken up the issue with the Vice Chancellor as well as the Head, Department of History both of whom had assured him that the decision was being reversed shortly and the entire earlier syllabus would be restored.
Asserting that such decisions, which had a deep cultural and historical sensitivities for Punjabis, were not repeated in future, Dr Cheema said “Punjab’s history must remain an integral and respected part of the academic study”.
