Behind the official note: Dhillon–Shah meeting was all about Punjab elections

New Delhi, June 7

Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon today called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence in New Delhi. While the official note spoke of law‑and‑order concerns, in reality Dhillon’s meeting with Amit Shah was a closed-door huddle on Punjab’s electoral strategy.

Sources indicate that the duo’s conversation focused on the 2027 Assembly elections. Reliable sources indicate threadbare discussions were held on whether the BJP should revive its alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal — a move strongly advocated by former Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh. Just yesterday, Amarinder met Shah and BJP president JP Nadda in Delhi, with long deliberations on Punjab’s electoral roadmap.

According to insiders, the BJP’s top brass is currently adopting a wait-and-watch policy, mindful of an impending reshuffle in the Punjab Congress. Senior leaders believe that once Congress reorganises its leadership, sidelining veterans and elevating new faces, the saffron party will be better positioned to recalibrate its strategy afresh.

Meanwhile, speculation is rife that Union Minister of State Ravneet Bittu, who is being readied for Punjab, may not be fielded from Ludhiana (Central) as earlier anticipated. Instead, sources suggest, he could be fielded against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in Dhuri — a move that would dramatically raise the stakes in Punjab’s electoral battlefield.

Dhillon’s meeting with Shah was thus significant, focused on exploring alliances and strategies for the Punjab elections.
