New Delhi, June 21
In a high‑stakes meeting at 10 Janpath today, Punjab Congress heavyweights gathered with Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Gandhi held detailed deliberations with senior leaders from Punjab to chart the party’s course for the 2027 State Assembly elections. Significantly, the huddle comes amid impending organisational changes within the Punjab Congress, with State Assembly elections slated for early 2027.
Significantly, to bolster the party’s election preparations, AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge has already received a comprehensive report on the state unit’s affairs from a three‑member panel comprising Ajay Maken, Meenakshi Natarajan and Bhajan Lal Jatav, tasked with assessing Punjab’s political terrain. Notably, all earlier meetings were convened under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and Kharge. But with Sonia Gandhi now stepping into the picture, it is increasingly evident that a final decision on restructuring the Punjab unit may be announced imminently.
Meanwhile, the meeting of Punjab Congress stalwarts called by Rahul Gandhi was attended by Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Pratap Singh Bajwa, former Chief Minister and CWC member Charanjit Singh Channi, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and CWC member Vijay Inder Singla.
After the meeting, Warring said, “I know only one thing—how the Congress party must contest elections, on which issues we should fight, and what our agenda will be. All these matters were discussed today. There is no difference of opinion within our party. We will uproot AAP and in Punjab, AAP will meet the same fate it did in Delhi.”
On the other hand, Bajwa remarked, “Today, Rahul Gandhi had called five senior Congress leaders of Punjab for discussions. I placed my viewpoint and whatever decision he takes, we will stand by it. We are committed soldiers of the Congress party. Whatever position he wants to give us or not, we will stand by Rahul and the Congress.”
