Chandigarh, May 18
Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar on Sunday alleged that the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has become so obsessed with winning the upcoming local body elections “by any means” that it has even forgotten to respect women.
In a press statement, Jakhar strongly condemned the alleged misconduct by police officials with MLA Ganieve Kaur Majithia and said that the ‘real face’ of the state government stands exposed through such actions.
Sharing a social media post on the issue, Jakhar said the government, which spent crores on publicity for the “Mawan Dhiyan Satkar Yojana,” was now allowing its police machinery to misbehave with a woman, who is an elected representative of the people too. He said Punjab would run according to democratic values and not through “police rule.”
The BJP leader further alleged that the AAP government was using unfair tactics to influence local body elections. Referring to senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia, Jakhar claimed that party workers had been encouraged to use “any means necessary” to secure victory in elections.
Jakhar accused the ruling party of denying NOCs, snatching nomination papers during the filing process, and rejecting documents through illegitimate methods in an attempt to manipulate the electoral process. According to him, the alleged mistreatment of a woman MLA reflects the government’s anti-women attitude.
Warning the Chief Minister against such actions, Jakhar said, remember, “as you sow, so shall you reap”, adding people of Punjab are closely watching every development.
Jakhar urged the government to ensure free and fair elections in accordance with democratic norms and asserted that the BJP would firmly oppose every act of alleged oppression by the government while continuing to defend democracy.
