Chandigarh, July 15
Chief Electoral Officer UT Chandigarh, Prerna Puri, IAS, announced the successful completion of the Enumeration Phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026, conducted from June 15 to July 14 under the directions of the Election Commission of India. She said the exercise, aimed at ensuring an accurate, inclusive and transparent electoral roll, covered 5,16,427 registered electors, with Booth Level Officers distributing 100% Enumeration Forms. Of these, 4,50,246 forms were collected and digitized, while 66,146 remained uncollected despite repeated visits. More than 1,780 Booth Level Agents participated, enhancing transparency.
As part of polling station rationalization, the number of polling stations has been reduced from 614 to 575. Ms. Puri highlighted that 3,80,795 electors were successfully linked with the previous SIR Electoral Roll of 2002 through self or progeny mapping. Field verification of uncollected forms revealed that 43,724 electors had permanently shifted, 12,568 were absent, 3,729 cited other reasons, 3,535 were found dead and 2,590 were duplicate entries. These names will not appear in the Draft Electoral Roll to be published on July 21. She also emphasized the extensive SVEEP campaign undertaken across Chandigarh, which included newspaper ads, radio jingles, SMS alerts, social media outreach, voter awareness vans, nukkad nataks, help desks and special camps, with active support from NSS volunteers, Electoral Literacy Clubs and Voter Awareness Forums.
The Draft Electoral Roll will be published on July 21 on the CEO Chandigarh website and ECINET platform, marking the beginning of the Notice Phase that will continue till September 18. Notices will be issued to electors with discrepancies or missing mapping details, and verification will be conducted by AEROs, ensuring no deletion without due process. Electors may be required to produce supporting documents as prescribed by the Election Commission, depending on their date of birth.
Citizens whose names do not appear in the Draft Roll may submit Form-6 during the Claims & Objections period from July 21 to August 20, while young citizens attaining 18 years on or before July 1, 2026, are also eligible to apply. Corrections and address changes may be submitted through Form-8. Applications can be filed online via ECINET or offline through BLOs, and assistance is available through the Voter Helpline 1950.
Puri appealed to all eligible citizens to verify their names in the Draft Electoral Roll immediately after its publication and submit claims or objections within the prescribed period to ensure every eligible voter is included.
